From Biogas to Climate Targets

Bigadan delivers high-quality, durable carbon removal solutions based on bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) to The Economist Group. The transaction was facilitated by Carbonfuture, acting as broker and infrastructure partner, ensuring transparency, credibility, and alignment with emerging European carbon removal frameworks.

High Integrity and EU Alignment

Through its BECCS projects, Bigadan captures biogenic CO₂ from biogas upgrading and energy production and ensures permanent geological storage.

The CO₂ is captured and liquefied before being transported to the Port of Esbjerg. Here, it is temporarily stored before being shipped for permanent storage in depleted oil fields in the North Sea. Once the CO₂ has been delivered to the port, INEOS take over transportation and final storage.

Bigadan is responsible for:

  • Developing and operating the full BECCS value chain
  • Ensuring robust Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of carbon removals
  • Delivering high-integrity carbon removal credits to The Economist Group
  • Aligning with emerging European carbon removal frameworks

The Economist Group: Committed to Science-Based Climate Action

The Economist Group is one of the world’s most respected media organisations, with a validated science-based target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030, in line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C pathway.

With a long-term ambition to reach net zero by 2045, the Group is also addressing residual emissions that cannot yet be eliminated through direct reductions.

The collaboration highlights growing demand from credible and forward-looking organisations for science-based, durable carbon removal solutions — exactly the type of solution Bigadan is positioned to deliver.

Engaging Employees in Real Climate Action

The Economist Group’s approach reflects an inclusive and practical way of working with climate action. Employees were invited to engage with a portfolio of carbon removal solutions, developed in partnership with Carbonfuture as part of the Group’s climate contribution budget.

As part of this process, The Economist Group selected Bigadan’s BECCS solution — facilitated by Carbonfuture — recognising the value of durable, high-integrity carbon removal from biogas.

Through Carbonfuture’s digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV+) system, all carbon removal credits are fully traceable and transparently documented, ensuring a reliable and credible data foundation for the entire process.

“We see this transaction as part of a broader transition. As frameworks mature, Bigadan aims to scale BECCS across additional facilities and continue delivering durable carbon removal solutions to companies with ambitious climate strategies.”

Why BECCS from Biogas?

Bigadan’s BECCS approach builds on existing biogas infrastructure, making it one of the most scalable and cost-efficient pathways to durable carbon removal available today.

Key characteristics:

  • Biogenic origin — CO₂ is captured from the natural carbon cycle
  • Permanent geological storage — ensuring long-term sequestration
  • Additionality — beyond business-as-usual operations
  • High-quality MRV — rigorous measurement and third-party verification
  • Circular co-benefits — renewable energy production and nutrient recycling

This combination of durability, traceability, and co-benefits makes the solution attractive to organisations with high requirements for both environmental integrity and credibility.

Looking Ahead: Scaling Across Europe

Bigadan sees this transaction as an important milestone in the transition toward integrated energy and carbon removal solutions. As European frameworks — including the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) — mature, Bigadan is well positioned to scale BECCS across additional facilities.
